The idea started when Greek historians who were passionate about creating lists of things decided to compile in a list of seven, the world’s best man-made structures. Why seven? Because they believed that number 7 is perfection, it’s the number of the five planets anciently known plus the sun and moon, and it’s the number of things a human brain can remember. It is not accurately known which historians have compiled the list of the World’s 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, however it is recognized by everyone up till today.
It is worth mentioning that two of Egypt’s wonders are on the list, firstly and it goes without saying the Great Pyramid of Giza (Pyramid of Khufu/Cheops) built over 5000 years ago, was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3800 years and is the only wonder of the 7 that is still standing till that day & largely intact. The second one is the Lighthouse of Alexandria known as the only practical wonder, one that was actually used for the purpose built for, but unfortunately 3 earthquakes between 956 and 1323 were capable of completely destroying it.
Have you heard that a new list of the world’s wonders was recently made??? In 2000 a Swiss based organization initiated the creation of a list of the World’s New 7 Wonders based on people’s votes from all over the world. Places that were subject to voting were selected by the UNESCO. A first list was created in 2007 for greatest man-made structures -in no specific order-, another was created in 2011 for nature -in no specific order-, and a third for cities that hasn’t been finalized yet.
