Why visit Moscow?
- The Kremlin and Red Square impress even the most jaded of travellers!
- The nightlife is incredible. In summer, sit on a terrace with views over the city!
- The city is filled with history and the Soviet legacy is everywhere!
Average temperatures in the winter are famously low, and you can expect heavy snow. The weather is kinder in the summer months, when the city comes to life.
Russian is the official language of Moscow, although English is more widely spoken here than anywhere else in Russia. However, longer term residents will need to learn Russian in order to find work and deal with everyday administration.
- Moscow has the largest number of millionaires in the world, with New York coming second.
- At the weekend, more than 100,000 people a day visit Gorky Park.
- Stray dogs ride the same metro route everyday as they know where to go to get lunch.
Shopping is a key passtime in the Russian capital, and you're never far from a mall. Check out Kapitoliy, a modern super mall, and the 19th century GUM on Red Square looks more like a palace than a shopping centre. There are also museums aplenty. Moscow may not be blessed with mountains or beaches, but visitors can indulge in traditional sauna and spa facilities after a busy day shopping and sightseeing.
As in every major city, everything from sushi to pizza is available in Moscow. For something really Russian, though, go for the wild mushroom pelmeni (dumplings) in Cafe Pushkin - they're the best in town.
In general, Russians are fairly conservative and like to dress up- if you visit the opera or Bolshoi Ballet, be sure to wear something formal. Russians tend to wear dark colours, especially in the wintertime. Orthodox churches require women to cover their heads, while shoulders and legs should be covered by both sexes when visiting.
The crime rate among tourists is low, and Moscow is generally safe and well lit, even late at night. Unfortunately homophobia is rife, and is aid and abetted by anti-progressive laws recently passed by the Kremlin. A small minority of the population also hold strong anti-immigrant views.
