About United Airlines

Committed to being “flier friendly,” United offers more premium-cabin flat-bed seats and extra-legroom, economy-class seating than any other airline in North America, and in 2013 became the first U.S. global carrier to offer satellite-based Wi-Fi, including on long-haul overseas routes.

United flights also features DIRECTV on more than 200 aircraft, and offers more live television access than any other airline in the world. Business Traveler magazine awarded United Best Airline for North American Travel for 2013, and readers of Global Traveler magazine have voted United's MileagePlus program the Best Frequent-Flyer program for ten consecutive years.

Baggage Allowance

Checked-in Baggage:

The checked luggage policy for United Airlines is a bit … complicated. So complicated, in fact, the airline’s website directs you to a ‘checked baggage service charge’ calculator to determine your bag allowance per your specific flight or route.

Generally speaking, a long-haul international flight (like from Cairo to New York City) in United’s economy class gets you two bags at no charge – 23 kg each in Economy Class, 32 kg each in Business/First Class. For a domestic flight, you could be paying $25 to check your first bag.

Carry-on Luggage:

  • All passengers are allowed one personal item and one carry-on piece of luggage at no charge.
  • The maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm), including handles and wheels.
  • The personal bag (such as a backpack, purse, or laptop bag) are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm).

Check-in & Flight Status

Web check-in is available on domestic and international flights for tickets issued electronically. You need your confirmation number, e-ticket, or MileagePlus number to check in online. (Some restrictions apply for on-line check in for international travel).

Online check-in begins 24 hours prior to flight departure.

For quick check-in at the airport, utilize the self-service kiosks or curbside check-in to skip the line at the ticket counter. Please be sure to arrive 2-3 hours early for an international departure.

In-Flight Entertainment

United Airlines offers travelers a variety of the latest entertainment options, including hundreds of on-demand movies, TV shows, music selections, games, and even the opportunity to learn languages inflight.

On international flights, most of the aircraft seats (all premium seats on all international flights) are equipped with 110V power outlets to charge your personal electronic device.

In-Flight Dining

United offers full meal service in all cabins on international flights, and in flights longer than 900 miles (and select 700 mile flights) in the Business and First Class Cabins. In Economy Class, “Choice Menu Snack Shop” and “Bistro on Board” (United’s catering services) are available for purchase on flights lasting between 2-3.5 hours.

United Airlines boasts one of the most efficient, reliable fleets in the sky. In the last decade, their fleet of Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer jets has increased fuel efficiency 30% per passenger mile. They have also added eight state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliner jets to their fleet in the last few years. They plan on adding another 270 aircraft in the next decade.
